The Still Life Cafe in Independence, California. Wow! This incredible French bistro with a LIVE piano player in this one-horse town. Sitting at the bar, I could have sworn I was in Paris: French waitress, French chef, French cuisine, and French service.

Dropped $100 on an amazing meal - 2 ice cold pale ales, baguette w/ herbed butter, chevre & mixed green salad, tournedos (beef tenderloin) in a peppercorn-mushroom sauce w/ potatoes and green beans, 2 glasses of a spicy Cotes-du-Rhone, almond tart and coffee.

I should add that we hiked over Kearsage Pass to get to Independence for a re-supply. Stopped at Bullfrog Lake for lunch & tried out the fishing pole my father sent to me in Kennedy Meadows. The easiest fishing ever- caught a trout on every other cast. Thanks dad…
