Starting: Section H1 - Pass NE of Mt. Guyot
Ending: Section H2 - Crabtree Meadows
17-mile side trip today to the top of the tallest mountain in the lower 48: Mt. Whitney, standing proudly at 14,496 feet. Some brief notes on the safe & successful summit:
1. The trail up to Mt. Whitney is BEAUTIFUL! Alpine meadows, lakes, & snowfields.
2. The weather was perfect, all sunshine and blue sky.
3. Hiking 766 miles before reaching Whitney really gets you in great shape and acclimated to the elevation. We literally ran by day-hikers struggling for every breath & step.
4. There is an exposed open-air toilet on top that has the greatest view of any outhouse on the planet. Be warned however, that climbers coming up the mountaineer route pop out right in front of you & they will see (and hear and smell) you at your finest…
