Starting: Section A1 - Campo
Ending:  Section A3 - Lake Morena Campground

My father & I arrived at the border at 7:00 am. Fueled by fresh legs & 1st day enthusiasm, I covered the hot 16 miles from Campo to Hauser creek by 2 pm.

Resting at the base of Morena Butte, looking up at the imposing series of switchbacks, I decided to empty my pack & re-evaluate my "necessities". I am carrying WAY too much food when I can (hopefully) resupply in both Lake Morena & Mt. Laguna. If not, I will just have to sacrifice some of my recently acquired baby fat.

The last 4 miles of the day, including the hike up Morena Butte kicked my ass. I coasted into Lake Morena campground on fumes, where I promptly drank 4 cans of fruit punch from the vending machine.

It was a good 1st day…
